A man stands at busy intersection, his shoulders weighed down by a dark coat. As the light turns green, he walks into the jungle of skyscrapers, disappearing in their deep shadows.
An ear-splitting explosion resonates through the canyons. Thrown on his back, oxygen pushed out of his lungs—his ears ring. Shards of glass are raining from the sky, bouncing off the heavy leather covering his chest. Half blinded, he staggers to his feet. Slowly, painfully. Cars rolled over, flames licking on steel. The smell of burnt flesh. He retches. Sirens echo, as he stumbles away. Something catches his eye. A teddy bear, scorched, an ear missing. Misplaced in the debris, a world away from where it belongs. Quiet suburbia. White picket fences. He picks it up, caresses the molten fabric. It could be anyone’s. He knows, it’s not. It’s her favourite. Meet Harris Klein, the man who is no longer.
